This project presented a truly unique and special opportunity for our office. It is situated on a 2.26-acre lot within Grand Teton National Park, offering stunning views of the Teton mountain range to the west and overlooking the historic Mormon Row to the east. The clients were inspired by the May barn in Mormon Row for the design of their modest 1,000-square-foot home. They aimed to maintain a strong historical connection in their project to ensure it blended seamlessly into the landscape and referenced the vernacular architecture of the original homesteaders in the area.

Guided by the location and history of the property, Principal Kurt Dubbe designed a simple, modern home that resembles an old farmstead and pays homage to the gambrel roof of the May barn. Access to the home is provided by an elevator and a spiral staircase cleverly disguised as a grain silo. Upon entering, you are welcomed into a cozy great room featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase breathtaking views of the Tetons. This elevated level also includes an open kitchen, two bedrooms, a bathroom, a laundry area, and front and back decks.

The ground floor of the structure contains garage bays, additional storage, and a small studio Accessory Residential Unit (ARU). The barn-style exterior features red-stained reclaimed board and batten siding, shingled gables, dormers, and a shake roof. Vintage cupolas from Montana enhance the overall antique aesthetic.

The outdoor spaces were meticulously designed, encompassing patios on two sides, a waterfall, a fire pit area, and a paved section for a restored sheepherder’s wagon that has been repurposed as a unique office space. The completed project offers a sense of stepping back in time while enjoying modern comforts, immersing you in nature and the grandeur of this remarkable location.
