CAR CORNER

A multi-service gas station accommodating both aesthetic and functional needs

Jackson, Wyoming  •  23,800 sq. ft.

Design Team: Chris Moulder, AIA

The project site is at the intersection of South Park Loop Road and West Broadway in Jackson, Wyoming. The development consists of a gas station with 4 dual pump islands covered by a canopy, a kiosk structure for an attendant, and a 4,181 square foot convenience store with 1,444 square feet of ancillary office space. In addition to the gas station, there is a 2,870 square foot auto lube/car wash building, a 9,500 square foot auto service/auto retail center, two additional buildings for light vehicle repair bays, storage space, and support area totaling 6,478 square feet.

With the abundance of visitors that drive through Jackson Hole every year, the plan accommodates for all sizes of vehicles from conventional family cars and recreational vehicles, to light-duty trucks and trailer rigs. The layout also includes easy vehicular access from U.S. Highway 89 and South Park Look Road, the southern gateway entrance to the town.

Our client wanted The Car Corner to be a full service station where visitors could refuel their vehicles, check their oil, wash their cars if needed, make any necessary repairs, get something to eat, and purchase souvenirs.

Since the automobile was first introduced into Yellowstone National Park in 1916, a new level of infrastructure was required to service vehicles and their drivers. Mr. Charles A. Hamilton focused on that need and proceeded to develop a full service way stations for the early visitors to the area.

In the tradition of these historic way stations, The Car Corner is a classic piece of architecture that accommodates both aesthetic and functional needs. The careful placement of the buildings within the site is important to the function of the various businesses and for breaking up the massive square footage of floor space. The definition of the various buildings as they relate to shape, form, texture, and proportion was fundamental to the success of this project.
