FOUR LAZY F

8 Single Family Homes

Teton County, Wyoming • 2,046 to 2,976 sq. ft.

Design Team: Chris Moulder, AIA; Ben Weisbeck, Nereida Ortiz

Dubbe Moulder Architects had the extraordinary opportunity to design eight unique homes on adjacent lots in the Cottonwood Park subdivision in Jackson, Wyoming. Our client’s family had developed all of Cottonwood Park in the 1970’s, and the family had held on to these lots with the aim of eventually building high quality single-family homes for professionals seeking long-term rentals.

While each house is completely different in plan, elevation and mass, the common features among the homes include spacious open floorplans with 3 to 4 bedrooms, 2.5 to 3.5 baths, living room natural gas fireplaces, plentiful storage, abundant windows, and all are completed with high quality finishes and interior selections. The homes range from 2,046 square feet of living space to 2,976 square feet and have oversized two-car garages.

Each home has been thoughtfully designed to also include a flex room that can be used to address each tenant’s needs, perhaps as an office, exercise room, craft room/studio, play room or TV room. Other design priorities for each house include large kitchens with ample cabinets, work surfaces and islands, master bedrooms with walk-in closets and master bathrooms with double vanities and generous walk-in showers. The homes all have the bonus of a powder room for guests, dedicated mud/laundry rooms and entry foyers. It was also important that each home have outdoor space to enjoy so they all have protected front porches and back decks or in some plans, second floor decks that provide covered decks for the living spaces below.

As a consequence of designing all eight homes, DMA was able to carefully design each individual home to take full advantage of the views available on each lot and design each home to shield views to the close neighbors. Two of the homes, Lot 12 and Lot 13, make the most of views and privacy with inverted living plans. This allows for views over neighboring homes to the surrounding mountains and second floor decks with views of Snow King Mountain. One of the inverted living plans even has the convenience of a dumb waiter for easily handling groceries from the car to the second floor kitchen. All of the homes have copious windows flooding the interiors with natural light and connecting the inhabitants to the world outside. These homes are made for comfortable LIVING!

With each home having its own unique floor plan, each property also has its own unique exterior expression and interesting façade of vertical and horizontal siding. The houses are unified by the earthy stain colors, corner windows, and outdoor living spaces of porches and covered decks that create a cohesive street scene.

Creating an entire street scape of eight homes on contiguous lots was an exceptional, challenging and fun opportunity. Seeing all of the homes completed and occupied is even more rewarding. Collaborating with the owner on each of the homes and realizing their vision is the nuts and bolts of being an architect. It is why we do what we do and the process and result is very satisfying to everyone involved.
